The cottage was set in an isolated and open setting within the North Wessex Downs AONB and was desperately in need of updating. When our client bought the property there was clear option of demolishing the cottage and building a brand new replacement dwelling from scratch. Both ourselves, the client and the architect however felt it would be a huge shame to do this, instead we progressed an option for a complementary extension to run alongside the cottage with a lightweight link between the two buildings. Whilst the extension is large the careful design means the extension will site very happily alongside the original thatched cottage. This relationship together with the removal of the previous poor quality extensions will allow the original thatch property to be revealed alongside its modern extension.
