Whilst the option of extending this property upwards and creating a first floor in a style in keeping with this property would have been the easy option, our client and their architect wanted a much more radical extension that would change the character of the property. 

After a couple of options were tried the council refused the application and it was clear they wanted a ‘standard dormer bungalow’ approach to the extension. We were not convinced and lodged an appeal against the refusal. Whilst that appeal was lost the Planning Inspector agreed with us on almost all the issues but felt there were two detailed issues that were on balance unacceptable. The decision therefore allowed us to make those couple of changes, without losing the overall feel of the design approach desired, and the subsequent planning application was approved by the council.
